Is pushing and progressing your surfing important to you? Maybe you've been working on a specific manoeuvre for the past few months but conditions, time and tide haven't cooperated. Maybe you want to up your rail game, or help seek an exit when threading a tube, hell, even connecting drive and flow – enhancing all these things can help make surfing a more enjoyable experience, if you're willing to work on them.

But that's just it, isn't it... time. The big defeater of progression. Oh let's not down play the fact that any time in the water is time well spent, of course it is. And it's why we all connect feet to foam for any given duration. But what if you could condense your learning curve, to push your surfing into a different gear, in a remote setting with pumping waves?

Spot guide: Bali + Lombok.

Right now, Indo Surf Crew are offering a 10-day intermediate coaching course. Indo Surf Crew takes pride in working with environmentally and socially conscious ventures such as Mahi Mahi Resort Surf Resort where they hosted their first retreat. Mahi-Mahi is involved in several conservation projects, amongst them saving the turtles in the Banyak islands, where they also carry out surf-charters.

They say that in just that week-and-a-bit, it's likely you'll learn as much, or more, than you would in a whole year getting to grips with your local. And yes, we know how that sounds – but with the consistency of waves over in Indo, the expertise on hand and the types of waves you'd be subject to, it might not be too bold a claim.

And The Peak, the wave out front of the resort? It's consistent year round, has some classic shape to it and prefers a smaller swell. The next retreats are running in September, followed by a session in Rote. But the date and location is based on MSW forecasts and the Indo Surf Crew track how the swell has been in those areas for the past 10-years before a call is made.

What to Expect
A recent surf coaching retreat was hosted by Rodrigo Machado, who taught a fresh set of surf techniques and conditioning, repeating movements again and again to drill them down all down. Also, the Wim Hof breathing techniques were taught, which helps relax the body and create the best possible pre-surf mindset. This routine goes down in the mornings. And Rodrigo's developed his own techniques called Power Surf, which is inspired by ground movements of martial arts, capoeira and yoga. Mr Machado integrated surf techniques in to it and founded this system.

Following that, it was shred time, with comprehensive video analysis after, identifying the movements that need to be corrected and what can be improved upon. From there, it was personal, in depth analysis, while practicing and repeating flawed movements on the ground. The rest of the day was more surfing, exploring surf setups and a sports massage to cap it all out.

Perhaps some of the more important things during the course was refining the basics. After all, if you've years of the basics that need ironing out, then it's going to take a bit of work to get them as slick as possible. Maybe your back foot is planting too far forward and you've been taking half a second to shuffle it back over a grip pad? Maybe your not as central as you could be, chest closed to the wave face? From reshapsing pop ups, to learning how to gouge out lay back hacks, this course offers so much flexibility, that you'll be on track to where you want to be in no time.

Restorative Yoga and Massages
If the training seems intense, and it is, rest assured that necessary care is given to help recover. Shoulder and knee problems are probably the most common in surfers but can all be fixed up during the stay as well as offering yoga to help keep the body limber.

Can anyone join?
Guess that's going to be the main question here, and this retreat is definitely not for beginners. Most surfers will already have years of surfing behind them and these retreats with Rodrigo are designed for intermediates who already know how to perform basic bottom and top turns to more advanced surfers who wish to bring their barrel game to the next level. Though, beginners' retreats are available. The retreats are designed by Rodrigo and Uriel - who is a surf Videographer based in Indonesia.
