RESPECT is a word John John Florence utters more than once to describe his upbringing in Hawaii and he's been party to few descriptions himself growing up in the surfing world's spotlight.

"Natural aptitude, innate ability, unusual creative capacity, destined for the top" are all descriptions which when heaped upon young, impressionable shoulders often result in creation of relational antonyms: "laziness, complacency, arrogance."

John John Florence seem to have skirted this minefield, he probably pulled an inverted 720 over it before snagging the wave of the day at Backdoor. He does however love a good bit of competition and will be competing alongside Kelly Slater in this year's Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
