Rio Pro Round 2

HIGHLIGHTS of the Billabong Rio Pro which went down in incredibly tricky conditions at Barra da Tijuca.

Cobbling together a 3 minute highlight reel cannot have been an easy task as the world’s most talented surfers desperately hunted corners and chandeliering shacks amidst the South American gloom. The locals didn’t fare well, wonderkid Medina fell foul of a rookie misunderstanding and went out, kicking off a samba domino effect for the local contingent.

This gnarly beachbreak was a tricky maelstrom of chance rewarding more often than not the conservative approach. The entertainment factor of watching one move hefty closeouts followed by 10 minutes of paddling (often via the beach to replace a shattered stick) is only tempered by memories of the intricate potential possibilities if these guys were to be allowed a template like that of Lowers.

The good news is there is plenty of swell on tap. The forecast predicts a dropping swell today which will be welcomed by competitors before another solid episode on Thursday and Friday which will shift things back into the overhead range.

It’s live here.
