European Swell Shout Take Two

It’s not unusual. The Atlantic Jetstream settles into a pattern and we can see carbon copy conditions over a period of weeks. It can create frustrating flat spells, or equally a run of monster storms lighting up the best big wave spots. Hot on the heels of the last swell we’re looking at a very similar storm over the next few days and another chance for European surfers to fill their boots. Video the session and you could even win a boat trip around North Sumatra with your mates with The Winter Session.

As with last weeks monster swell this next storm is already forming in the Labrador sea right now. Following a similar track it’s generating swell through the same combination of size, power and a movement building energy through a huge dynamic fetch. Where last week’s swell weighs in just a little heavier than this one (50ft peak heights vs. 40ft predicted here) the positives for this one are a slightly more northerly track for the storm, meaning, initially, the chance of lighter local winds as the first stage of the swell arrives on Friday at many locations.

For example where at Mullaghmore in Ireland surfers braved 40mph South Westerly winds on the last swell, there’s a good chance they could be half this on Friday at times. That’s still windy by most counts, but for Ireland at the peak of a swell like this it’s not the norm.

Complicating things further south is the chance of another smaller low pressure system running through the Bay of Biscay below this storm that’ll bring tricky local winds later in the weekend. Friday looks to be the day almost everywhere with, for example, just light variable winds at Nazare as the start of the swell fills in.

*Sessions from this swell with be eligible to enter The Winter Session, so don’t forget to document them. To enter send your edit via wetransfer.com to: winter@magicseaweed.com and we’ll do the rest.
