About China

Centred around Hong Kong surfing in China is only starting to take off. Surf is most consistent during the autumn and winter monsoon but bigger and more tricky during the spring and summer typhoon season. Winds generally blow from the east swinging more southerly in summer. Several aborted attempts were made to surf here before Peter Drouyn's short stint in 1985. Hong Kong's surfing association was set up in 1997. Taiwan's surfing is focused on the island's east facing coastline. Typhoon's hit from June to October with the possibility of classic swells. However the monsoon season from November to February brings more consistent waves. First surfed in 1965 by Jeff Sun, surfing has remained a popular sport with the well known and crowded spots around Honeymoon Bay retaining a reputation for friendly locals.
